I also have a 1 3/4" ring. I was afraid to try it on for a long time because I knew it would be too tight. When I finally got the balls to try it, it wasn't too bad, but obviously tighter than I preferred. The smaller ones are 'squarish' with slightly rounded edges. I think they would feel better if they were completely round.
I would say for a beginner start with 2", you can always go smaller. If you start small you might not like it and not try a more comfortable one. I also like the solid ones, but a newbie should probably start with a rubber one that can stretch until you get used to it.
